Viva Las Vegas!!

Last week I went to Las Vegas, staying at the MGM Grand. This was a part business, part vacation trip. It was my first time back since I was about 15 years old. And I must admit, I kind of like it when I was young. Because everything was so mysterious. And you really couldn't go anywhere because everything was for gown ups. I just remember playing in the arcade everyday.

Well, the arcade has changed. Now, everywhere I went, I could play every game. But, I really am not a gambler. If fact, this was the first time I gambled at a Casino and with people I didn't know. And I found out quick that I should never gamble again. I lost $80 in 15 min playing Black Jack. Och.... It really did hurt to loose that money. I was thinking, "I could have bought some camera equipment with that money." Even my wife said I should never gamble again. I will listen to her on this one.

So, my main reason for going to Vegas was to attend the Wedding & Portrait Photographers International (WPPI) Conference that is held every year.

This was my first time going and I wanted to get some inspiration and techniques from the world's best. So, I signed up for a hands-on Plus class with a photographer that I truly admire, Yervant. He is know for combining Fashion with his wedding, something that I am striving to do. (I'll post some of the stuff we did in class later!)

My wife came in town for Valentine's Day and we took a stroll down the Strand. And, if you know my wife, she likes to shop. So, the first place we went to was the Shops at Caesars Palace. At first, I was like, it's just like every other mall. You spend money!! But, then I saw a store that caught my attention. It was Pete Rose signing autographs. So, I had to jump in on that one. When he was signing my baseball, we had a pretty good talk. He is so humble and genuine. (Who would have thought?)

That night, we went to go see KA (which is a Cirque du Soleil show). It was amazing!!

The next day, guess what. More shopping!! (Ugh....) This time, we went to the Fashion Show Mall. It was very similar to the Galleria in Houston. Same ol', same ol'. So, we only stayed for a few minutes. But, like its name, we actually saw a fashion show.

After my wife left, I had to stay a few more days for the rest of the conference. And I learned a lot. It exceeded my expectations. Some of the other photographers' classes I attended were:

Claude Jodoin (master at lighting)
Jose Villa (great film photographer, yes I said film)
Me Ra Koh (phenomenal story and technique)
Jesh de Rox (I loved his class and his new way of thinking. Check out his site and you'll see what I mean.)
Andrew & Nicole of LaCour Photo (great at every aspect of photography, including the business side)
Johnathan Rubin (the future of photography and videography, truly amazing work).

There were a few more, but this classes stood out from the rest.

In closing, I have gained a lot of knowledge and wisdom during my stay in Las Vegas. I will definitely be going again. Also, look out for some interesting NEW stuff coming from me. As I will be combining what I learned to the style I had. So, you should see some AMAZING things!!

Please help my congratulate Brooke and Phil on becoming parents for the very first time. You might remember this couple, from a wedding I did a few years ago (Brooke & Phil's Wedding). They became parents of a healthy baby boy. He is currently 1 month old and as hungry as ever. But, that is what you get when you have tall parents. Ha...

Also, they had 4 Great Dane puppies on hand. Look at those eyes. And one was winking at me. :)

Birds of a Feather.....Flock Together.....

Internet, I thought the last Super Bowl (Patriots vs Giants) was a pretty good one, but Super Bowl XLIII really was great. I wasn't really pulling for one team or the other, I just wanted to see a great game. And indeed, I did. Santonio Holmes making that catch over 3 defenders was amazing. Neither team wanted to give up. If there was more time, I think the Cardinals would have came back. It was just one of those games of who had the ball last.
Also, I'm not a big beer drinker. In fact, I'm really not a drinker at all. But, I saw this recipe on the Food Network (Down Home with the Neelys) this week and thought, "Why not, it's Super Bowl weekend." You're suppose to mix beer with everything.

So, this recipe is called Beer Can Chicken. I kind of burnt it on one side, but it still came out pretty good. My wife made some red beans and rice and cheddar biscuits. It was a great Super Bowl meal.

Here are the before and after pics of the chicken. Can you tell a difference between the wings from the first to the second pic? HA....HA....

Another year of my life..

Well, another year goes by and all I can say is "What happened? I thought I was just graduating from High School." But, I wake up and realize that I have a beautiful wife and daughter and a little dog, that look up to me everyday.

So, Internet, I have given 31 years of my life to the world, and I still feel like I'm 21. (Some people even think I look younger than that. Kudos to those individuals.)

But, I still have a lot of ideas and visions of photographs to give, so continue to keep tabs on me.

Here is my favorite cake: Yellow cake with Chocolate icing. (My wife makes the best Yellow Cake, hands down.) So, to all of my existing and future clients, if you are determining what kind of cake to have at your wedding reception, this is a hint. ...............wink...wink...

Santa's Little Helper!!

Well, Internet, I really haven't shown you the new additional to our family, because I haven't taken too many good pics of him. But, I month ago I bought a Yorkie for my wife, who has been buggy me for years to buy one. (Yeah, I know...........you say, "What's the hold up?")

Anyways, I finally gave in and we now have another family member demanding attention from all of us. I, mean, I like Chase, but I just have watch my step when walking through the house late at night. And I'm not talking about Chase himself, just the things he leaves behind.

But, finally, I got a chance to photograph Chase in one of the many outfits my wife tends to buy for him. I really feel sorry for him, but oh, well, at least it's not me in the Elf suit. Ha....

I VOTED TODAY!!!

I remember the '04 election, where my wife and I waited more than an hour to vote, because the line was out the door. Also, I remember that we waited 3 hours to cast our vote for the 2008 primaries, but decided to leave because it was unorganized and the venue was too small. (They tried to fit nearly 400 people into a small public library. And it wasn't the whole library. It was the meeting room, that could only hold 50 people. You might have seen it on the news.)

But, this time, I wasn't going risk it. This is a historic election, and I encourage.....wait....I strongly encourage everyone to get out and vote. And VOTE EARLY!! I almost guarantee that the wait on Nov 4 to vote will be 2-3 times as long as the last election. And that will force a lot of people into the decision to not vote. Which is wrong? Remember, people were killed, beaten, sprayed with hoses, bitten by dogs, and jailed to get the right to vote. So, if it takes you 2 days to vote, then you should wait. But, that is the reason why you should vote early, so you don't have to go through that.

But, today, I took time out of my lunch schedule to vote. And guess what, it only took 5 minutes. Yes, I said that correctly, 5 minutes. I was a bit surprised, but super happy. I was also proud of my self in a patriotic way. There is nothing like voting for something that you believe will change the face of America, and provide you with greater opportunity than you have now.

So, once again, get out and vote and VOTE EARLY. And for those who live in West Houston, go to George Bush park to vote. It's quick and easy.

Kherri & McDonald - Wedding

I love the Fall!!!

Today, I finally felt the fall breeze. It was still kind of hot, but just cool enough to help me remember the memories of Fall. I think Fall is like no other season. Of course, it has some of the best holidays (Thanksgiving and Christmas), but I think the greatest thing Fall brings us is a sense of warmth through the year.

Whether you had the hardest year or the greatest year, you can always sense a new day coming and an end to the past year. I always remember sitting next to my mom during the holidays, drinking Egg Nog (not sure if I like it now) and talking about what happened during the year and things to improve upon for next year. When you mix in great food, and an occasional football game, you really can't beat that.

I really do hope everyone has a great rest of the year! And I'll be the first one to tell you. Happy Halloween, Happy Thanksgiving and Merry Christmas!

Kalyn & Justin - Wedding

I must say, I was pretty choked up when I heard the story of this couple. If there is ever a testimonial that we should all listen to, this is the one! This is a prime example of a miracle from the One above. And they were blessed with an beautiful angel (shown in the first picture). My heart truly goes out to them and all the family members.
But, on third Saturday of August, they celebrated their miracle with family and friends. It was a joyous occasion that definitely can be described as Timeless!!

Jennifer & Johnathan - The Bid for Her

A few weeks ago, I attended one of the greatest auctions I have ever gone to. It wasn't a luxury car or piece of furniture for sale. It was a bid for Jennifer. Johnathan's soon to be wife.

Johnathan and his groomsmen had to go through a grueling set of crazy tasks to win over the love of Jennifer and her bridesmaids. And with the weather close to 100 degrees, it made the tasks that much harder.

From princess stickers, baby diapers, stocking putt-putt, cheerleader pyramids and some food that I would not dare eat; I must say, if that didn't win her over, I would have helped them break the door down.

Freedom to Succeed Tour: David Jay and Jasmine Star

On Tuesday, I had the honor to meet and talk to 2 photographers that I admire and respect so much. Not only for their photographer skills, but how they approach life. We all want to be free of something. Whether it be your job or current situation. And these photographers are a great example of how to "Get Free" (Ha, DJ I used you slogan).

David Jay and Jasmine Star came to Houston to teach other photographers how to become Great. And by Great, I mean to be Great in everything we do. Especially, being Great friends to others and helping them succeed. To be Great, not perfect. Nobody is perfect, so why try killing yourself to be perfect. Just be Great.

When they first walked it, it seemed so unreal. I did not think I would ever talk to them, but David Jay walked straight up to me. I believe I was the first one he talked to. All I can say is "WOW". Talk about a shocker. We talked about soccer (I still play), fashion, and of course photography. But, his eyes lit up when I said fashion. And we kept talking about it, because I try an incorporate fashion in everything I do. I believe it is the future for wedding photography. It was great. We had a few things in common.

Then later on that night, I met and talked to Jasmine. She was everything I imagined. Charming, powerful, sweet, and mostly energetic. Very energetic. What got me was her story. How she got started? It all steamed back to her mother, who had cancer. (Sound familiar................My mother died of cancer.) We started shooting with similar reasons. So, I had something in common with Jasmine, too. WOW!!

To sum it up, they gave me inspiration and additional confidence, that some day I will be like them.

Any who, here are a couple of pics.

Don't I look like I have a Joker smile. Geez, I have to work on that. Ha....

And my cheesy face. No wonder I stay behind the camera.

Also, I had the opportunity to meet other Texas Photographers. And they taught me a few things. These girls are great. You better watch out for them.

I find this place very mysterious and full of life. As the name suggests, "Navel (or Center) of the World". With the statues representing a divine being flowing through the island.

1,000 Places To See Before You Die

Yesterday, my wife bought me a book (1,000 Places To See Before You Die by Patricia Schultz)
for our anniversary. And being a man that likes to travel, I must say, that she choose the right book. I have skimmed through it, and although it mostly talks about the luxury 5-star hotels available at various destinations (which I'll probably never go to...at least, not right now). It does show places that I would have never thought to go to.

So, in the coming months, I'm going to post a different destination every week. I'll try and stay away from the most popular cities, such as, Paris, London, New York, etc. So, look out for these posts and share the great places you have been.

This was a great shoot. And I love the sunset shots over Lake Conroe. Let me say it again. "I LOVE THE SUNSET SHOTS." This is one of about hundred Iguanas we ran across. It was like they came out of hibernation.
We took this little boat from the hotel to the shopping district. It was a fun ride.
This is David Letterman house! I guess to get away from his busy world. Ha...

I had to take these last 2 pics with my tripod. It was very interesting, because it was pretty windy that day and I didn't want me camera to fall. But, I think I did a pretty good job of pretending. (don't let my wife know about it, ok ) ; )

My daughter went Trick-or-Treating on Halloween with her cousin and friends. My wife and I decided to tag along the way. It was interesting, as we thought our daughter would be afraid of all the monsters and witches out there, but she wasn't. I have come to the conclusion that she is acting when she is at home.

I had the greatest time in St Thomas, USVI with this couple. They are truly a wonderful, powerful, and potent (I had to throw that one in for those who know why) couple. The ceremony was elegant and beautiful with the Caribbean Sea in the background. The scenery itself was breath-taking. But, adding this couple in the mix, it made my trip to St Thomas and memory I will never forget.

The Run of My Life!

So, now that I have some time, let me tell you about my wild trip I had coming back to Houston from St. Thomas, USVI.

First, the St Thomas airport told everyone that they had to be at the airport 2 hours prior to take-off. Because we had to go through US Customs. So, my wife and I decide to get there 2.5 hrs early and guess how long it took us to go through Customs and baggage claims.............................

25 minutes...............Yes, 25 minutes.
If I knew that was going to be the case, I would have stayed on the beach for another hour or so.

But, anyways, so we had to sit in the small airport and wait 2 hours. We played Uno and watched CNN because of the fires in Cali.

So, we fly to Puerto Rico to fly to Miami to fly to Houston. And guess what, the departure time is delayed 45 minutes. Now, most of the time, I wouldn't care, but our flight from Miami to Houston takes off 30 minutes after we land in Miami. (Did you catch that?) We land in Miami and we have 20 minutes to get to the next gate. We are in the back of the plane and it takes 10 minutes for us to get off the plane.
So, here we go....I feel like I'm on my High School Track team again, but in this case, I have 10 minutes to go 300 yards (3 football fields) to get to the next gate, with my camera bag, computer bag, and camrecorder bag. (I know, that's a lot of bags)

We get there, with about 1 minute to spare. (Shall I say, my wife gets there first. Yes, I'm ashamed.) I am tried, I am sweating and just want to sit down. Everyone on the plane is looking at us funny. (Haha) We get to our seats, and someone is seating in one of our seats and he didn't even care to switch to the seat behind him, which was empty. Luckily, another person gets up (in the same row) and sits in the other seat. (Thank you to whom ever that person was, because I was about to tear that guy a new one.)

So, that was my story. Sorry if it was long. I just had to get it off my chest. I will show pics of St. Thomas later in the week.

We had an adventure on this photoshoot. First, we had to brave the rain without an umbrella. We got lucky, because it only sprinkled a little bit. Then, as CJ was helping Tiffany get out of the waterfall, both almost went swimming (last picture). But, in all, it was a great shoot. Congrats to Tiffany & CJ, who are getting married in September.

I hope everyone has a nice Easter weekend! The weather is suppose to be nice on Friday. So, if you are off of work, make sure you step outside and enjoy the day. Now, the bad news, Saturday and Sunday, it's suppose to rain, according to the Weather Channel. But, you know how Houston weather is. It will probably rain for 30 min and stop. Let's hope for the best.

In Memory of Scooby

This past weekend, my wife and I learned that a true friend and family member passed away. Scooby, who was our Sister-in-law's dog, was not only a smart and fun dog to play with, but his name was one of the first words my daugther spoke. "Soo-be" is what she said. And I will never forget that. She would always try to find him and pull his tail. This was the first dog she ever saw and everytime we went over to my Sister-in-law's house, Scooby was the first thing she wanted to see.
So, this is in memory of Scooby................................RIP......... We'll miss you!
